I'll definately give that a try.I bought an Infinity subwoofer that had the same problem. I thought it was the voice coil also but when I pushed down on the cone there was no rubbing. With some fiddling around I found out the terminals to where the tinsel leads connect didn't have a good connection. So I hooked up the speaker wire straight to the tinsel leads and VOILA! no more sound. It has been working fine ever since. Not sure if this would be the case for you also but it doesn't hurt to try.
