What is this sound, and why do I have it.

First off, READ the entire post. Don't give me your opinion until you do so, because you'll likely say to do something I've already tried.

I bought the Seas L18 speakers about 2 weeks ago and have had them installed a week today. Since I bought them I noticed the passenger's side speaker made a crappy sound. (video at the end) After a while, I decided to see if the driver's side does it, too. It does.

What I've done so far:

I've connected wire directly to the tinsel leads.

I've tried every combination of speaker channel I can think of.

I played them on 2 seperate amps.

I played them off a new set of wires directly to the speakers.

I played music, then tones.

I switched channels on the amp.

I played in the doors & free air.

After I got the same "popping" sound from both, I measured voltage with a DMM.

Got this:

For passenger's side 21.8v. So ~ 60watts @ 8ohms.

For Driver's side 24.7v. ~77watts @ 8ohms.

Clipping shouldn't be an issue here, since my amp is rated @ 300w x 2 bridged @ 4ohms. Therefore, 150w x 2 @ 8ohms.

I only am trying to get rated power out of these speakers and am having a rough time.

I called Madisound and the guy said he didn't know what it could be. He suggested I try a new amp, and I did. Other than that, I ran into a wall with them. He also said he was sure it wouldn't be break in, since that doesn't make a "noise", it just causes the speaker to not sound as clear.

Any suggestions here? Am I simply overpowering them (with much under suggested power)? They barely even move @ 100watts @ 4 ohms. I'm serious. They've been playing for at least 6 hours on at least 50watts, but never more than 100w. They've never played below 80hz w/a 30db slope, and only gone up to 1.2k today just to see if there was a difference. Usually they've been between 80-315.

I'm about to pull my f*ing hair out trying to figure this out. On top of all that, they just don't sound good unless I turn it down pretty low. Once I get to about 50w they start sounding crappy. I've overdriven speakers a few times when setting gains just to test my limits, but never has one made this noise before. It seems to coincidental that they would both be bad out of the box, however, these haven't ONE TIME seen power over the 100w @ 8ohms they're rated for. Not fuggin once!

Here's a link to the video. This is the sound both make.

video:

Heeeeeelp!

yea, it's not tinsel leads. I held them down on both speakers to make sure of that. Still had the noise

Remember guys, both speakers do this. I babied these speakers out of the box. And they've never been consistently played on anything above rated power. Not once.

Matter of fact, when I dropped them in, I knew they required some break in, so at first they only got 50watts @ 8ohms. Didn't even go above that. That's why it took so long until I realized there was a problem with them. I gave it 3 days before I tried to give them more power and I got this noise.

Push down on the cone and listen for any scratching noise. If you hear something return them back to madisound.

You could also bridge them and wire the amp to 4ohms, just so you know its not clipping.

probably distorted them too much. 50 watts @ 8 ohm seems to be the max amout of power u can draw outta ur amp without too much distortion, if u pushed more out of ur amp u were probably sending clipped signals. Also that's if ur amp is putting out rated power and u had a constant 14.4vs

I pushed down and heard nothing. I pushed up and heard nothing.

The amp is bridged. Did you read my entire post? If so, I'm not sure what you're talking about...

What?

The amp is rated @ 300 x 2 @ 4ohms. 8 ohms means half power. So, the amp is capable of 150 x 2 @ 8 ohms. These speakers are rated for 100w @ 8ohms continuous. The highest wattage I get before that sound starts is 77watts @ 8 ohms.

Bridge the speakers, wire them in parallel...8 ohms doesnt mean 1/2 the power either, its probably less than 1/2
Really? Everything I've read implies that half ohms means half power.

Still not sure what you're meaning by bridging the speakers?

Yes, really.

For example..that Blaupunkt

100x4@4ohms

150x4@2ohms

Theoretically it should be 200x4@4ohms, 1/2 the impedance= double the power

Wire them both on the same channel...

+ to+ to+

-to-to-

Doesnt get any more simple than that

I thought you were saying something else. I had them once in parallel, non-bridged.

When you said in parallel you threw me off, since I already knew I had them off the same channel @ first.

I gotcha now. We were just on different pages, lol.

I bought an Infinity subwoofer that had the same problem. I thought it was the voice coil also but when I pushed down on the cone there was no rubbing. With some fiddling around I found out the terminals to where the tinsel leads connect didn't have a good connection. So I hooked up the speaker wire straight to the tinsel leads and VOILA! no more sound. It has been working fine ever since. Not sure if this would be the case for you also but it doesn't hurt to try.
