What is the purpose of capacitors?

I mean I've seen high money setups with caps in them like this one (yes i realize it's lightning audio) and it has a cap in it. Now MOST of the people (if not all) that I've talked to/heard on here say caps are worthless and you just need a red top in front, a yellow top in back, and 2,1,or 0 Gauge wire.

A caps ability to help your system largely depends on the amps, and charging system. If you have a fully regulated amp like a JL /series, or Zapco, a cap won't help much because the amps make the same wattage regardless of system voltage (12v or 14+v) If you are using a loosely regulated amp like a Dls, or Orion (I think) then the cap provides an electrical buffer to ensure a constant supply voltage to the amp. In a car like a Honda that only has an 80 amp alternator, this can be beneficial in a high-watt setup that draws as much amperage as the alternator can supply. For the casual user a cap is not really nec, and niether is a second battery, usually the big 3 is enough, and the battery could be replaced w/a yellow top if needed. I like a cap in a Honda, because it helps with the headlights flickering as the A/C compressor kicks on at night, though without it, I have never seen my headlights dim with the bass hitting hard either, but I also don't have a high watt system in this car. To sum up, most people don't need a capacitor, though if you want to use one, I really feel there is nothing wrong with that.

ok lets sayy I own a 98 Honda Civic (and I do). I'm gonna put the Alphasonik 1200DA and CMPX215 with 2 and 8 gauge wiring a red top and a yellow top. ne cap needed?

nope nvr mind i tried to draw it but as soon as I tried to do a battery I had a brain fart. soooo....HU to Amp, amp to...battery...?how exactly would you wire this. (sry)

I'd put a yellow top under the hood, skip the red top and cap, big 3 it w/4 guage, and run 4guage to your distro block, with short lengths of 8 guage to each amp. Your lucky, the alternator is easy to get to on those cars, mine was a friggin Whoore!

Red tops are starter batteries, yellow tops are storage type batteries that can be discharged and recharged without hurting them (deep cycle-designed for trailers and such) In your Civic, a yellow top will give you all the cranking power you need, plus the storage capacity you are looking for. Your factory battery only is rated at like 450 CCA, which is plenty for a small low compression engine like yours that only has to crank for about 2 seconds before it starts.
