What is the purpose of a passive radiator?

Before ANYONE starts raggin.....I have used the search and it does not bring up jack.....so....that said........whats the purpose of it?

Hey fellas, thanks for the links....big help!!! so would it be smart to be runnin a 10" with a 12" passie? and the only real down fall is the size of the boX?

A PR enclosure is basically the same thing as a regular vented enclosure. It does the same exact thing. In the car, the sq differences would not be noticed however. So using a pr enclosure would be entirely pointless. Just go ported...
