What HDTV do you use?

When using s-video it will only put out 480i. you have to use component inputs to get the higher resolution. Well thats how it works on my dvd player

I have no idea what the different input resolutions are, i just know more is better and progressive is better than interlaced or something like that.
This is my first step into HD cause I have been more than happy for 8 years with my 40" Mitsubishi tube. I have been meaning to go read up on all the different resolution options, but I havent had a chance yet.

When I hit the display button it says my modded xbox is sending a 480i signal to the monitor and it is hooked through svideo and optical. I am getting a component cable for the xbox and my dvd recorder tommorrow.
yeah xbox will only send a max of 480p same with digital cable (non HD). HD time warner sends 1080i signal though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif.

standard DVD players only do 480i anyway, some do 480p so unless you've got HD DVD or Blu-Ray you won't get a higher resolution from your DVD player.
and up converting dvd player will convert the signal to a 720/1080i signal. not true 720/1080 but it is alot better than the 480

means you can convert the 480x720 video that's on the dvd to the native resolution of your tv, bypassing the upconverter in the tv.

it's not 100% necessary, but a lot of HDTV's come with subpar built-in upconverters, which can cause the picture to end up blurry

picture watching a dvd on your computer with a generic mpeg-2 codec compared to watching the same dvd with a quality windvd or powerdvd mpeg-2 codec, or even better, with a video card with hardware mpeg-2 decompression

Just received my 37" Syntax Olevia today. Pretty nice unit for less than $670 shipped
I only have it hooked up with s-video at 480i right now, but I have some component cables on the way to change all that.

whered you get it for under 670?

im in the market for an HDTV, but, i dont want to spend over 700.

id like a good name brand like samsung or lg or hitachi, but that would bring my screen size down pretty far, id like 32-40"

Westinghouse makes TV's in that price range. Not as well known, but the PQ is as good as any major name brand. Original poster didn't like his, but I doubt he had it professionally calibrated.

Ugh, Westinghouse's TVs look awful, IMO ...
is that really really true or just personall opinion and why do you think that?

just asking cause i guess now i know why certain things happen certain ways

i renember like 3 months back i was gonna just put a down payment and pay the rest on my brothers best buy credit card and get the 47" 1080p westinghouse but my brother was busy and i was like f that im not wating so i bought the tv i have right now but sometimes i wonder if the 47" would of been a better choice. i guess it went for the best then.

Fry's/Outpost, I bought it on the 28th and it was delivered on the 30th

Not a single dead pixel and I just picked up the component video/optical audio cable for my modded xbox so I can stream over the network. Looks amazing qalthough it still says I am running 480i:(

I will hook up my progressive scan dvd player tommorrow and test an actual dvd with it instead of the compressed backup streamed from my server.
