What Happened to my Amp?

Today I'm almost positive that my amp fried, but this is my first system and I'm not really sure why it did. This morning when I turned my truck on, everything was fine. The volume was turned down to the point where lyrics weren't audible and the bass was barely audible. As I'm driving down the road, my amp starts freaking out turning itself off and on. I pulled over and turned my truck off, removed the keys, and opened the doors which should have killed all auxiliary power but my amp was still freaking out. Then all of a sudden it starts popping, snapping, and pouring smoke. I can't see where anything actually caught on fire, but my truck was filled with a phosphorus/firecracker smell all day long. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? Amp was a Kicker KX2500.1, btw.

low voltage?
Doubtfully the problem.

As JimJ suggested, it might be a turn on lead problem. Low voltage when the car's off would be of no to little significance... not to mention, I'm assuming the amp wasn't just installed, with that being said, it worked before... so either something happened and something shorted causing a massive voltage drop. But, that wouldn't effect the amp while it's off.

But even if it were a turn on lead problem, it was recent or else his battery would be dead. Unless he has a hardcore battery and the 2500 doesn't draw much power by just being on.

The amp has been installed for almost 5 months now and has worked flawlessly. I'm not exactly positive how the turn lead is hooked up because I had my system installed at best buy. Battery isn't very hardcore...just an everstart maxx from walmart.
