What does a bass boost do?

Bass boost generally gives a boost around a certain frequency. Typically it sounds like crap and adds distortion. Avoid if possible, or if you really like the way it sounds, just do it at lower volume and it'll at least be safe.

If you look at it from the point of a graph it it raises the amplitude usually 12-18 db at 40-50 hz usually 45 and has a pretty sharp slope most of the time, so yes it will be louder to a certain point. bass boost also increases the likely hood of clipping, and causes distortion, use with care.

dang you beat me to it, wasn't here when i posted sorry didn't mean to jack your post.

I know it sounds ****** and causes distortion and clipping, I'm wondering the actual mechanics on it, such as how it boosts it. . And NINE, remote gain turns the gain up and down from the point you have it set on the amp.

Also, when a sine wave is squared off, is this clipping or would it just be distortion since it doesn't "go off the graph" per say
when it squares off (running a non square wave) this is both clipping, and causes distortion. main thing with clipping is that it rejects proper cooling

I answered this above (i think)

I was under the impression clipping an distortion were different.

So the amp draws more power, I don't see how it clips the signal though. If you have sufficient electrical, wouldn't it work fine then? Just throwing things out there, I'm probably wrong.

Taken right from the owners manual of my amp, this should help understand what it does to the signal:

Pay attention to the left side, thats the bass boost at 45hz, the other side is a mid range boost from a non monoblock model.
