Benefit is efficiency. Downsides are usually a poor transient response/group delay and peaky/boomy response.

I believe a 4th order can have good transient response, but others suffer badly.

Hahah. I've never really experimented but I am doing a 4th order in my astro. Of course that's not intended to do anything resembling SQ.
