what are capacitors for?

i see alot of people that have them, and i see alot of people who i wouldnt consider to even have that powerful of a 'system' and also have them. why do you need them, and when do you need them?

Most "show off" systems have them for looks and looks only. They serve no purpose for power stiffening purposes like if your headlights dim.

Caps are a waste of money. You are better off spending about $20 on upgrading the Big-3. Don't listen to the marketing hype of "stiffens your bass response". It doesn't. It filters your power line going to the amplifier keeping the peaks low and the valleys high. Also, if your alternator cannot handle the extra charging source they will turn out to be a big headache even more so than you think. Don't buy a cap... upgrade your Big-3 (see the uber fine sticky in the wiring forum). If your lights are still dimming, upgrade your battery and alternator. If your lights are still dimming then, you have a serious problem. Adding a cap to your system is nothing more than a band-aid to a bigger problem.

your going to get alot of different opinions on CAPS....mostly bad on this forum.

R Clark i believe has done alot of testing on CAPs and pretty much said their useless...

but from 1 of my setups, it did help out..

i was runnin an Orion Xtr Pro 2400 on stock electircal system on a 92 Honda civic...the amp would draw so much power and the voltage of the car wouldnt keep up and the amp wouldnt play... basically the amp would shut down after any large amount of bass..

well i installed an CAP and it did help the amp from shuttin down so much... no, i didnt fix the problem totally, but did allow it where i could play the amp....

hell...i wasnt thinking about getting one. i was just looking at pics on another forum and some kid had a farad cap, but he only had some little sh*tty 250 watt amp, so im like wtf are these things for anyway.

For those who don't know. Richard Clark is the owner of the cap patent. However, as much as I hate caps, I don't think they are useless. They do have a very good use for mediating power spikes and regulating the line. That's about it.

They help you escape those pesky ticket giving cops for loud music.
