what a burning coil sound like?

he set his gain at volume 46, the max is probably around 62.
he is correct. max volume is 62 i set the gains at 46. so you think im still clipping at 45 volume with custom eq? i would hate to have to turn my eq to flat and have my bass ****.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for all the replies guys

alright ill try playin some music with everything the way it was when i set the gains at 46 volume and if its not loud enough maybe ill sell my alpine amp and get like a aq1200d or something and then run 870wrms at 2ohms to it.

it sucks that type rs can take so much rms power but cant take some clipping

lol i know that was a stupid remark...im just pissed cause now im worried i may have messed something up. but yea i know clipping is an unclean signal and is much harder on a sub than throwing a bunch more clean power to a sub.

i just dont know what to do now cause it got loud enough for me with the custom eq low dialed in but now when i take it off i wont be satisfied:(

Every time you boost at the head unit you have to make double the power to compensate for it. If you boost 3db @ 45 hz it will take twice the power from your amp to produce the frequency without distortion.

Distortion hits, so you are adjusting for how hard it hits and really just dialing in the distortion.

A proper EQ setup CUTS from the flat line "0" , not ADDS to it. Tune everything to flatline. If you feel like there is not enough bass then you actually have too much mids and tweet in there. CUT the mid and tweet, do not BOOST the bass. Every 3db boost costs you half your power. Every 3db cut SAVES half your amps power allowing it to allocate the power over the frequency spectrum more evenly.

There's plenty more to learn, but I'm not typing it up unless I know you're listening. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

As far as your coils, I've seen the SLA feature and it is pretty much straight crap signal so I don't doubt your coils are charred, but likely still "ok" for now. If you've run them hard enough to fail the sniff test, your spiders are probably in worse shape than your coils as far as their elasticity.

alright so you said tune everything to flatline. so should i just set the eq to flat or tune to flatline in the custom eq? because i lowered my low frequency to 40hz from like 80 or 100hz, which made a big difference in bass. so that is boosting even though i lowered the frequency? and if that was boosting how many dbs you think it was?

and what would happen if i kept the custom eq the way i have it but only listened to music at say 35-40 volume instead of 45?

oh and yea im listening, i can always learn more about car audio:)

thanks

ps. if i were to reset my gains, what settings should i use? i was thinking subwoofer settings (like the bass and LPF all the way up), bass boosts on amp and hu off, sla at 0, and eq flat? then after im done setting it i should just leave it alone right? (except drop the lpf down some)

i would keep everything flat.

set ur gain correctly and u should be golden. All those settings are basically just boost.

if ur unhappy with loudness..get urself a new amp. get a hifonics brutus, they do around 1000wrms at 2ohm. And if u do plan to upgrade, u can run it at 1ohm to give u 1600wrms.

i have a custom built box that is 2.15 cubic feet after displacements tuned to 37 hz fb. alpine recommends about 2 cubic feet at 36hz fb, but i went alittle bigger since i listen to rap.

oh and heres an update: today i played da blow, bme click, and throw it up all with the volume at 40 and the custom eq on to test. i went back and smelled the air coming out of my port and it smells good.....its def not a strong smell and it smells like wood. so im thinking the whole time it may of just been the smell of my enclosure?

but i set my gain withs a 0db 50hz test tone, but people have told me most songs are recorded at -3db, so doesnt that give me some room to boost alittle?

and i also played a song with my eq at flat, and when i turn it up my bass isnt very loud and the music coming out of the speakers is actually alittle too loud for me...it kinda hurt my ears (i played at song at 46 volume which is my max "safe" volume with all settings the way they were when i set my gain)

so im just stuck what to do. reset gain? if so what settings because the sla up made everything more rounded? continue using custom eq (not past volume 40) if it is infact just the smell of my enclosure? just set my eq to flat and not have alot of bass? i dont think i want a new amp because if i were running around 1000rms i would have to upgrade some electrical stuff..

thanks guys

^^ok lol. so alpine wouldnt fix/replace my sub if it were to blow and its under warranty? and is there any chance my amp could blow too or is the sub the only thing i have to worry about?

thanks alot man
