what a burning coil sound like?

i had a cvr once upon a time in a small ported enclosure, and the only time i smelled the sub is when i had the frequency set to 160 on the hu.i dropped it back to 100hz and never smelled it again.try lowering the frequency and see if that helps.

my lpf on the amp is at 100hz...this is the way it came so i didnt mess with it...although ive hard some people like 80hz and others 100hz?

i have been playing with both on my kicker amp, allthough the 100hz has more output it seems,i like it at about 85 for my application.try setting ur low pass on amp to 80,and ur hu to 80.if it doesnt sound right, then you need to tweek on the hu.

alright thanks man. and should i stop using the custom eq and just go back to the flat (which is what i had it set to when i set the gain)?

no man just play with it,you'll only learn how to make it sound good in ur own application by trying different scenerios.if you mean the way they set the eq from factory, then no,dont except that, customize it to ur liking

alright cool. i just wasnt sure if the custom eq was what was causing the burning coil smell at high volumes, since i added more bass setting through it than how it was when the gain was set

you keep asking the same question over and over again even after people say to stop using the custom eq.

are you just waiting until you get the answer you want to hear, or what?

cause i have always read that the gain should be set with eq to flat, then you go back and tune to your likings in the custom eq....but now people on here are tellin me that this custom eq is causing the smell. so i just am tryin to get as many opinions as possible, thats all.

and im still not positive it truly is the coil smelling, because its not a terrible smell and its not very strong, and people make it seem like the smell should be terrible

it may just because its a new sub, and the glue/coil laquer is burning off, but ill try turning eq to flat and see how it sounds

smells like a buring curcuit board. mabe a little heavier metalic smell.

wall socket those *****es.
ok for some reason that smell seems like it would be really bad, and mine just smells like wood and maybe a faint smell of caulk (which i lined the inside of my box with) so im doubting its the coil, but maybe it is....i just dont know.

ive had the setup for about 4 weaks....i have been turning it up for about two weaks and only noticed the smell yesterday when i actually went to the back where my sub is. i had been playing throw it up at 45 volume out of 46...and the only thing i had changed in the settings from when i set the gain is the custom eq. i put my back seat down revealing the back of my enclosure and amp to check on the amp and eveyrthing and make sure it was staying in place...this is when i smelled it. then 4 hours later i got in my suv and i smelled it alittle bit.

That my friend is a clipped signal. There's no way I would ever dial in my amp/eq at that level.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif
