what a burning coil sound like?

alright. well what i did made my sub quite a bit louder than it was on flat. so should i put it back on flat and just have it not be loud? i dont get why its not loud unless i dial in bass on the cutom eq. and the thing that made the sub louder on the cutom eq was a frequency. do you know what that is? like i made the frequency lower in the settings (like 40hz i think) and this made my sub alot louder/better soundiing)

err ok i misread something, ignore what i wrote before..

you're amp pushes 500 watts.. if you put +3dbs on any settings.. it will be trying to produce 1000 watts.. which it wont,, and only get worse from there on out..

you cant raise settings because the sub can take it.. your amp needs to be able to produce the clean power also

put it this way.. adding say +6db's is prolly the equalviant of turning the volume to like 60 while the rest is on 45 or whatevr you said.

its not uncommon to have to turn substages down to keep up with your mids.. i have too.. honestly i hate my subs "blasting" over, it sounds like shit

and yeah upping say 45hz is like using the bass boost on the amp (which is where alot are actually set at).. and isnt recommended around here, unless you know what you're doing.

if you up 45 hz (or wahtever) run a test tone of that freqency and set the gain/dmm to that.

ok well if i reset my gain with it at 45hz wouldnt it end up just having the gain lower than it is now and it will sound the same as it does now? like right now if i set my eq to flat and all setting the way there were when i set my gain and played music at 45 volume.

then i reset my gain with the frequency at 45 hz and play music at 45 volume...wouldnt the two sound the same?

it wouldnt sound the same.. it would get just as loud but peak at 45 hz and the rest would be slightly lower, yes this unfortunately is how it works.

how big is your box? tuning?

sorry if you said before i forget and dont feel like reading back

I don't think that amp has the power to kill that sub even if your clipping balls. People give R's 1000rms all day with no problems, and i've even heard of people running 1500rms clean power with no problems. Heck there used to be a member on here that competed with 4 12" R's and a bxi20006d on each one. Basically i think even if what you are smelling is the coil its just from breaking in, i don't think your gonna fry your sub.

u can still send a sub a clipped signal no matter how much power ur giving it. A clipped signal is and will always, overtime, kill a a sub
True but i doubt 500rms is going to stink the coil up just from playing a short amount of time. Maybe over time the sub will begin to heat up and smell a little but than again i don't know how long the OP has had the setup and has been noticing the smell.

i can tell ya what it smells like too... after last weekend i dont think i will ever forget.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
Unforgettable smell...

ive had the setup for about 4 weaks....i have been turning it up for about two weaks and only noticed the smell yesterday when i actually went to the back where my sub is. i had been playing throw it up at 45 volume out of 46...and the only thing i had changed in the settings from when i set the gain is the custom eq. i put my back seat down revealing the back of my enclosure and amp to check on the amp and eveyrthing and make sure it was staying in place...this is when i smelled it. then 4 hours later i got in my suv and i smelled it alittle bit.

Unforgettable smell...
see people are saying that and the smell that i smell isnt that bad of a smell....so i dont know what it is.

you guys think im ok playing music at high volumes with my custom eq setting on (which made my bass alot better after adjustments) or should i just put the eq back to flat and have it not be loud....

no, you arent ok playing music at high volumes if youre smelling the coil burning.

set the eq low on the head unit to 0.

im sure the sla +4 isnt really helping out either.

i set my gain with the sla up so wouldnt that be fine though? i dont get my sub isnt loud unless i dial in more bass thorugh the custom eq....people said i must be doin something wrong if a type r isnt loud
