What 6.5's to get? Need advice!

Hey guys,

I found out in the last threads my mistakes, now I am ready to make things right. My budget is low though, about $75 max. I need a pair of 6.5 inch speakers for the FRONT of my Accord. I have stock tweeters.

I am most interested in clarity, sound quality, and real sounds. My current 4-ways are amazingly clear, but it basically sounds like there is 100 times too much treble. My HU (Pioneer 2600) does not allow "enough" adjustment with these speakers. The high notes are incredibly painful. I am fairly uninterested in bass...The cheapest of speakers will be enough. What should I do? Here is what I found on my own.

I few CD's I love include Jack Johnson, Dave Mathews, Thursday, 311, Audioslave, and Incubus...I guess that's Alternative music?

I can get Infinity Reference 6002si's from cardomain.com for $56...Should I spend more money for a silk tweeter and one that is adjustable? These seem like a great deal and a great speaker. I recall shipping being free. I can also get them to fit perfectly in my stock Accord doors. Infinity seems like one of those brand you just can't go wrong with.

They also have "Phoenix Gold Octane-R 6.5 coaxial speakers.... They are $47.95 with free shipping. Are these decent? They are on sale, so I figured I would mention them.

I also found some Boston Acoustics FX's, for $70.99 from Woofersetc.com. What about these?

Am I on the right track?

aww dont use stock tweeters they are $0.30 at best... Do you know how to solder? I'll send ya a fairly nicely put together xover design that you can use for DIY -- call it a prototype low end -- havn't had a chance to play with this one yet and tweak it but...

$66.30 in raw drivers costs -- shipping + about $40 for an ultra budget xover (4th order... lots of parts -- some of the parts can be found at madisound's buyout page though...) ..... will kick most things under $400's butt -- possibly a few exceptions.... I am heavily learning towards the Infinity Reference 6012si's... The shallow mount and silk tweeter is very enticing.

I found them for $66 and that seems like a steal. Any objections? Will I have any regrets?

Infinity's are known to have harsh tweets I would not recomend them to you since that does not sound like what you want

It seems like someone here says that every brand has "harsh tweets".

Not every brand mostly, MB Quarts and Infinities since everyone askes abotu them so often.

DLS does not, they are the exact opposite and the tweeters can actualy get down lower than many. Theres other brands too but I have not heard them, you might try CDT also. I'm sure others will chime in with their experiences. Harsh is a bit relative, but Infinities and MBQ are just well known for this.

I prefer a softer sounding silk tweet myself. Aluminum will tend to be mroe harsh and critical than Silk or fabric. But these can be harsh also on some sets.

I can't recall my CDT ef-61cgi (1" silk with the 560 xovers) being harsh, not even with 150-200 watts per side...

First off, keep in mind my price range...Near $70. I will not have an amp.

I just went to a local audio place and all they carry is Polk and Pioneer and there was nothing for me to listen to.

Those Inifinity's I found have silk tweeters, but I guess I'll still eliminate them.

Please share what you guys have!

well for $70 for 4 speakers your not going to get much, that like $12 for each speaker and a couple bucks for the crossover tops.

Mabe you should just keep what you have. But yea many 4 ways seem to be harsh ...

The Infinity's will most likely be the brightest of those listed and probably be the weakest on the low end. I hear that the PG's are good but I have never listened to them. I usually find even the low end Bostons sound really nice. Whichever you get let us know how you like them. Lot of guys are looking for a good budget solution.

So I went all over our city today with a buddy of mine.

We went to some local independent shops and some big ones like Circuit City and Best Buy. Pioneer was ruled out, Kenwood was quickly eliminated, as was Sony. Eclipse and JL were out because of price. Polk was eliminated because evidently their quality goes way down without an amp.

I was left with the Infinity 60i2's and the Alpine SPS-170A. Both have a swivel tweater. The Alpines go for $60 SHIPPED on Ebay, while the Inifinity's go for $66 PLUS SHIPPING. I found the Alpines for sale locally for $90 and the Infinity's for $100. I did a bunch of listening to each at every store that had them. The Alpines really sounded nice, so did the Infinity's. The Infinity's seemed to be slightly "harsher", if I can say that. Both very high quality. Both had VERY little distortion at decent/high volumes. Both have no problem running without an amp.

In the end, I fell in love with the Alpines.

They are headed my way! The total was $59, shipped, insured, and brand new.

Next question - Should I cut off power to my stock tweeters?
