Welding question

not sure if this is in the right category but here we go.

I have a shitty old isuzu i wanna weld a rollcage on to it.. nothing pro, just practice.

What do i need to do before i start welding on the chassis?

disconnect battery im assuming but what about the gas tank?

are you supposed to drain the gas tank every time you weld or is the spot your working on the only hot spot(electrically)?

current takes the shortest path so i don't see why it would fry anything so someone answer my question. Thanks

Disconnect the battery. As far as the gas tank is concerned, just make sure that where you are welding is not going to get the tank hot. I have welded on newer vehicle with the battery connected with no issues, but that was on the frame. Welding on the body may have a possibility of hurting electronics, I doubt it, but disconnecting the battery is a good safeguard. You can buy welding blankets is there is anything that you are afraid is too close to where you are welding and may get too hot or molten metal may drop on it.

Here's a welding blanket:

if its a new vehicle its wise to disconnect the computers, as they tend to fry easily. you can weld with the battery fully connected, but just to be safe disconnect it. welding isnt hard, just throw some tack welds to hold it together and give it hell around the pipe. its good fun.
