Watts to db

From reading around on forums and the internet this is what I think I understand.

Lets say a component set is rated 89.5db at 1 meter, and the component set is a 200W set. at 1 watt I would have my 89.5db. With 2 watts i would be at 92.5db. all the way up to 200 watts. If I did my math right I will get about 111-113 watts out of these speakers at 200 watts.

Am I right with the way watts translate into db or am in completly off.

Efficiency is a poor tool to determine possible SPL. Calculating like this does not take into account other limiting factors.

You cannot plug in numbers to a formula as you have done and expect to get real world results.

if that were the case, then any speaker that is rated the same would have the same volume. there are many other factors, and like anything else, formulas don't equal real world

Just to give you a little glimmer of hope that you weren't hopelessly mislead....in theory, your assumption would be correct since in theory doubling the power increases output by 3db.

10*log(200/1) = 23db

89.5 + 23 = 112.5db

However, as the others have correctly pointed out....those numbers are purely hypothetical and not correct for "the real world" where you will have things such as power compression, mechanical limitations, etc.

Theoretically you would be correct.

Realistically, things just don't work out that well //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
