Wanting to upgrade headunitn, if needed

I'm runnin a sony gt640ui right now and I was looking at an alpine 9887 or a alpine digital media reciever. Would the sound quailty be enhanced even though I'm runnin everything through a rf 360.2 and a rf t400-4? I know a home theater installer and he said your system is only as good as the weakest link and it all starts from the source. Any advice or input?
