Want to add a little bass to stock system.

Let me preface this by saying that my stock system is REALLY good, at least by my standards. I have a BMW 3 series with the Logic 7 13-speaker stereo system from the factory. I am happy with it, but I just would like a lot more low end. It has two 8" woofers mounted under the front seats that really give a nice midrance thump, but I need more. Since it is very easy to tap into the rear amp wiring, and the battery is in the trunk, I figure this should be a piece of cake. I have an Alpine PDX 1.1000 that I removed from my truck before trading it in. I had the Alpine amp pusing a pair of Rockford Fosgate Punch P3 P3SD410 low profile 10" subs. They were mounted in an MTX Thunderform sealed box under the back seat of my supercab truck. I never liked the sound that they put out, so I really want something a little more robust. I was actually considering using the Alpine PDX 1.1000 to push a pair of JL 10w7's or a single JL 13w7, but everything I read about the w7's is negative. So, help me out guys. Should I reuse the Alpine PDX 1.1000? What subs should I buy? Should I go with a single 10? 12? 13? Thanks in advance for any insight you guys can give me. BTW, I will be building my own enclosure, and it will most likely be sealed, since I prefer the bass that comes from sealed enclosures.

There's nothing wrong with the w7. If you can afford it, then I say go for it. They are very nice sounding subs. The only reason you read a lot of negative reviews is because there are two type of people on here. The basshead who wants nothing but SPL, which the W7 can't give. And the cheapskate looking for a good bang for your buck kind of setup. I'm the 2nd type so i could never afford the w7, but if you can, do it.

x2. w7s are nice woofers...but I wouldnt spend the money they cost because I believe I can get equal or greater for less... But thats all opinion.

the JL w7 is a great sub but overpriced and much better can be had for the money something like these would be good on that alpine SSA Shop - Incriminator Audio 12" Flatlyne Sub woofer or SSA Shop - SoundSolutionsAudio 12" SSA ICON Sub woofer
Thanks! Those Icons look really nice. I might go with those. How would a pair of the 12's run on the Alpine 1.1000? What is the difference between the coper and aluminum voice coil?

w7's arent bad. But if your looking for a clean sound id suggest and IDQ or idmax depending how loud you want the sub to be. IDQ sounds fantastic as does the idmax but the max would be quite a bit louder

copper is generally more musical, alum can take more power

well, if you like deep bass, and want to stick to a sealed enclosure, then you really are looking for cone area, and excursion....... so, you want more in the full bass range?, or you just want to extend the low all the way down, and don't really need more in the mid 60hz+? if you plan on keeping the 8's under the seat and are pleased with the level of output, then you may find that the combination of those and a sql sealed in the trunk are going to pretty much throw what you want back off balance, so, keeping in your final goal, here are a few things to consider.....

A- you are going to have to contend with penetrating the rear seat/deck, so keep that in mind, which you already have the power to do with that amp.

B- you already have the higher end of your curve being pushed into the cab, so either nix the 8's to keep with the rout you are currently headed, or factor the current output curve into what will be going in the trunk.

C- don't throw the idea of deep spl shakers out the window, because you can still make them sound just the way you want

D- a ported enclosure can give you more penetration to the cab in a shorter range (i.e. 32hz can give a nice 15-60hz flat response before upper end roll off, done right, and the whole system can respond to a final output curve of sealed enclosures that you desire.

so, depending on what you like best for trunk space use, i would go one of the following routs. one, or 2 "stealth" box sealed to the sides of the trunk in single-12, or dual 10's. or, a deep spl box to compliment your current system. also, think about what you may be willing to do to the rear deck to allow sound through, like simply removing deadening and/or factory encosures, or whatever. factor in what you are willing to go with for space, and mods and pick an appropriate combination

I think I may be more confused now than before. I had no idea there were so many subwoofers on the market. I'm not willing to give up all of my trunk, which was the main reason for wanting to go sealed. I think a 3 cubic foot box for a pair of 12's is really the largest I would go. Those IDMax 12's are expensive!

well, you can do one real nice ported 12. i didn't meant to confuse you, just trying to point out there are a lot of options to reach your final goal. so, my suggestion, is a single 12 ported @ 28-32, or 2 sealed high excursion 10's in sealed boxes on the sides of the trunk. you should be able to get some smooth blending and low-end extension

What about a pair of 10" L7's? I can get the pair for less than $300 shipped. Are these any good? Since they're going to be in a trunk, SQ probably isn't that important.

they like around 1.75-2cu ported, but they definitely are made specifically to get loud on the lows. the newer ones aren't quite what the originals were, but still work real good. you would be surprised what one can do in an suv.
