W7 Question

Maybe one of you JL guys will know this.

To mount a W7 you have to pull the surround back, screw the screws in, put the surround back over the screws, then put the o-ring back on. Does anyone know why JL designed their subs this way? I have a few ideas, but I was wondering if anyone knew the correct answer.

It was purely functional by design, it happens to look good but that wasn't the reason for the design. It allowed JL to get a bigger surround for high excursion without sacrificing effective piston area. The result is that the sub has the excursion capability of a large surround sub and the piston area of a normal sub. Best of both worlds.

yep yep, the excurison on the W7 is insane, i will make a vid one of these days

Yeah, because that's never been done before. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

Just like helotaxi said....it was done so they could use a high-excursion capable surround without reducing cone area. The cosmetics of it was just a fringe benefit.

Had you glanced at JL's website for this information ( //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif ), they have a nice little info page about the "OverRoll" technology: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs_pages.php?page_id=36

Summary:By utilizing space wasted in conventional speakers, this ground-breaking innovation controls the W7's massive excursion without sacrificing precious cone area.
