Anyway...
I am going to replace the stock Monsoon mid ranges with the Adire Extremis 6.8's. The Adire's have the same outer diameter as the door panel speaker grills. The problem is I have tons of room, in fact too much room.
The stock speakers (mounted to a plastic spacer ring against the inner door skin) have a thin rubber gasket that mates from the front of the speaker to the backside of the door panel. I am assuming that this is to create somewhat of a seal to the immovable door speaker grill. Otherwise, there would be about a 1"-1.5" gap between the two. This gasket obviously will not fit around the larger diameter Adire driver. To compound the problem I neither know exactly how much distance there is between the inner skin and the backside of the panel, nor know if the two surfaces are parallell to each other. I can only guess.
So how would you mount these drivers?
--I could build about a 2.5" tall spacer with MDF rings. Mount these to the inner skin to have the Adire's close to the speaker grills.
--I could sandwich the Adire between two MDF rings. This would allow the driver magnet to clear the window and the outer MFD ring to get close to the door panel.
--I could cut out the stock speaker grill. Then mount the new driver to the outside of the door panel. Then create a MDF tube to somehow bridge the gap between the panel and the inner skin. This would be my last resort since each door panel is $800. (All leather VW R32 panel)
Any help is appreciated especially from those who tackled this car or problem before!
