Voices going through the subs

OK i know that it is terrible to have voices and other high frequencies going through the subs so i am going to need your ideas.

Here is what i have.

2 10" Alpine Blues single voice coil subs

2 8" dual voice coil subs (i forget what brand but it doesnt matter)

a 4 channel pioneer 180 watt rms amp

channel 1 is powering one ten, channel 2 the other.

channels 3 and four are bridged to both 8" subs and both subs are wired to produce a 4 ohm resistance.

Now about my problem. My amp has no cross over and i am running all of this off of my stock radio and a 6 disk cd changer. Now i have heard a couple of things as to how to get the high frequencies out of the subs. what i have heard is to get a head unit that can regulate the output frequencies (is this true?) or i was thinking just buy one of those adjustable crossovers for about 100-160 bucks that can precisely regulate each channel. Now i personaly think it would be better to go with the cross over but i am pretty new to all this and i want to keep my system cost low and i dont need a cd player

So what would be the best bang for my buck and will it make a huge difference getting the high frequencies out of my subs?

Thanks,

David Normandeau

two things you can do. get the crossover, or get a new amp with a crossover. i think external crossovers work better than internal crossovers tho, so if u dont wanna for over the money for a new amp, then just get the ext. crossovers, i thinkit'll work better that way.

you can also get a passive x-over (requires no power) too, from radio shack. just ask for one (it looks like a spool of copper wire. connect it inline with the positive wire and it will usually come in the 80 to 100 hz crossover point

spend the money for an active crossover. the passives that you can get at radio shack are pretty low quality, and you have no adjustability. you'll be much happier with an external, active crossover.

Originally posted by Rattlin Ranger Yah i think i will get an active x-over.. I like to be able to fully tweak everythink. By the way how much power does an X-over need,, i am just thinking of tapping it into my amp power supply.

if u do that i'd suggest wiring a relay in there....

You can head to partsexpress.com and get some FMOD inline filters.. they go on the RCA cables before the amp(s) (I'd suggest putting it inline before your first split).. You can get LPF (low pass filters) and cut off all freqs above a certian spot.. that will remove the top stuff..

Also, YES.. they make head units that have 'sub-woofer' outputs (only non-fading in some cases).. the Alpine I just got even has a built in LPF for the subs, changeable at 160-something-something-60 (not sure what they are, look up the specs, CDA 7892)..

You can also get those FMODs for each amp to tweek stuff.. I have a 20 HPF for my 12"s and have the amplifier's crossover set to ~60 Hz.. then I have a 70 HPF for my 10"s and the HU cuts off at ~160..

FMODs are like $25 for a pair (one for each channel)..

To the other guy, you can use that as a sub-sonic filter as well.. get a 20 HPF for the RCAs..

Course, this all goes out the window if you are running speaker level inputs to your amplifiers and not RCA pre-amp outputs.. then you need crossovers that will handle high level input, and those aren't cheap for ones that handle decent power.. better to clean the singal on RCA cables..

if your going to spend 200$ or more, ge a better amp.. your trying to run 4 subs off a 4 channel amp and w/ no cross over and it only pushes 180 watts.. you need to just buy a nice amp, and run your subs off it.. this way, youll have more power to your subs plus youll have a crossover to get rid of all the highs.. i have always considered 4 channels amp only for mids & highs..
