video of my HC 12"s.....

What would bottoming out look like?
Exactly, lmao dont get smart with me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

It does sort of sound like something slapping the back of the cone.......

Im hoping its just tinsel slap, but it would be some LOUD tinsel slap.

Im definitely going to check for slap tomorrow, these subs have had new tinsels soldered on them, maybe its too long on the one sub.

If I have to put felt on there, what kind of glue do I use?
Might be, I had some issues tinsel slap a few months again even with the felt, it was still beating on the spider area. It wasnt too loud since it came with felt on the cone, regardless I streched them to the point were I had soldered them back on atleast 3 times. The 4th time however it took a 1/2" out of the tinsel lead, looked a little toasted. Time for a re-cone.

As for what felt, not sure id personally just use a bit of whatever strong glue available to me (tight bond 2 or 3, gorilla glue) but thats just me.

No, I was serious.......can you SEE bottoming out?

Ive never had noises like this from a sub......not even sure what causes bottoming out. The HC's should be able to take the power no problem......

So I guess Im just gonna hope for tinsel slap.

Ill pull the sub that I think is bad tomorrow and see what I can determine.

Didn't sound like slap. Definitely sounded like something was bottoming out. Pull the sub out and inspect it for physical damage. Only the one driver is making that sound? Slap sounds more like a tapping noise and will not ever be audible with the trunk closed/from the cabin. Nor will it affect the sound in any way.

Yes, the one on the right.

Is there any way to tell if my sub is about to die? Coils check fine with a DMM, no scraping coil when I press on the cone (very carefully, with even pressure, of course.)

The only other thing I could think of- that box has had subs in and out of it quite a few times, a couple screw holes have air leaks- small, but still a leak.

Dont suppose that might be the culprit?

i have a couple of screws in my box that dont bite down, shouldnt be a problem for you

Well, let me put it this way. I couldnt see anything blatantly wrong that I could point out, also no noises were obvious. Mainly because the sound pressure was bottoming out the cameras mic (like most any vid does) so if there was any other noise there I couldnt pick it up.

Any bottoming out might just be from either too much power, or it was just being played below the tuning freq. Even with the 20.1 @ its lowest gaings setting, its still putting out quite a bit of power at 0.5ohms.

Im not sure what the xmax is on those subs, but they were stretching quite a bit. Might just be at its mechanical limits. When you pull the sub just look around for anything obvious. If the cone was hitting something other then the tinsels, some markings should be visable.

Do what you gotta do, worst comes to worst...time for an upgrade.

Good luck.

The subs should be able to take the power fine......RMS is 1200, and many people give them quite a bit more, up into the 1800+ neighborhood per sub.

Xmax is listed as 22mm.

Mine dont appear to move any farther than the ones I watched on Realm of Excursion.......

Shit, if it wasnt 2am, Id go out and check them now....

nice subs... originality is the bomb //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif what do you have for elec upgrades?

No electrical upgrades........yet.

I love these subs, just want them to sound right......If I cant get them to play how I know they should (I had a single HC 12" ran off 1500 a year or so ago), then its recone time, and they will become at least 15"s, 18"s if I can make them fit.
