You either have a bad power connection (batt or ground), or your output is shorted. I had a similar problem and discovered I had pinched a speaker wire to the car chassis.Well I'm back in car stereo Hell, I installed a new amp, A Punch 400-4 10 days ago, and now this amp is shutting off if I turn it up past 18.........aaaaarrrrrrrgggggggg!!!!!But when I turn the radio back down it comes back on. I'm really tiring of this crap.
If I read it right you said you had a 12 gauge ground? Man if that's what you really meant that's a serious problem.
Disconnct all speaker wires and measure across each one and also to ground. In my case, I had one speaker wire squished to ground. Amp went into protect mode at about 1/2 volume.Checking Impedance of the speakers(at the amp) can detect that, right? This could be what ultimately what killed the Alpine.
