Greyhound size party bus

I'm helping a friend with a party bus and need opinion on what amp(s) we should run. I'm been researching all morning and now my head hurts.

The system will consist of:

8 JL Audio 6x9's (60 watts RMS)

4 12" type R's (duel 4ohm) in a ported box (tuned to around 30hz)

Space won't be an issue for the amps but of course we will need to keep the cost reasonable and the amps will need to be reliable.

Here is what I've come up with just from searching this morning.

For the subs

Kicker ZX2500.1 (one)

RF T2500-1bd cp (one)

Orion XTR 15001 (2 amps)

Soundstream Rubicon 1600d (2 amps)

PPI Sedona S2000.1d (2 amps)

For the 6x9's

RF T600-4

Orion XTR 5004

Soundstream REF4.760

Soundstream Rubicon 4.600

PPI PC640.4

Any other amps I should look at please let me know. What should I be aware of when running some of the larger amps? Power wire and batteries won't be an issue as the batteries will only run the system and charge off of a generator while the bus is moving.

the zx2500 would be great because it will give full power at a 2ohm load and that is what your final load will be unless you choose .5ohms (2 would be better in my opinion). It will be plenty of power for the subs and can be had for around 400-500 bucks. for all of those 6x9s, I dont want to think of what ohm loads are achievable but just get whatever puts out the most clean power for your final ohm loads.

if you want i have a mint rockford fosgate t1000-4ad, birth sheet is 377 watts rms per channel into 4 ohms, and is one ohm stable.

and is super efficant.

May I suggest something?

Instead of 4 12's most likely in one box, why not multiple 8's or 10's throughout the bus? Under the seats and what not, I feel that would be best for the passengers in the bus. Bass all in your face.

i've been on four different party buses, all that size.

all of them, have never had a loud "boomin" system.

two of the companies called me the next day, to ask how it was and to give a little review type deal... i told em both, the system lacked, a lot.

both told me, yes, they know, but they can't have pounding bass, as it would attract too much attention, by the police, and that's the last thing you want on a party bus.

one of the guys also told me, he used to have a more powerful system, but idiot customers always want to tweak it, and mess it up.

so... my advise, go for sq, don't make it too loud to where you'll hear\feel the bass outside the bus... also, see what you can do about putting the cd player in a spot where the customer would have to give a cd to the driver or bartender (if there is one) on board... and just give them an ipod hook up in the back for the customer to hook up, so they can't mess with the eq and all that ish in the deck...

oh, and yea, all of them had a 10" or 12" sub every like ten feet under the bench seats going down the side of the bus... and a 6x9 or 5x7 along the top, by the metal bar that's there to hold on to

also, try calling other party bus companies in your area, pretend to be a customer looking to rent the bus for a night, see if you can stop by to look at the bus before you decide, and check out their system, see what their doing...

good luck, i'd love to see pics of your build process...

Thanks for the information dgaf

We have an area down town where all the bars are and the cops pretty much leave everyone alone as long as long as laws aren't being broken so the sound won't really be an issue. We also take it to the lake during the summer so that road leads outside the city limits and then it's just parked at the lake. Again sound pollution won't be an issue.

One reason we want to go a little over the top is because of the lack of a decent system on most buses as you've pointed out. It's going to be pretty cool to advertise 3000 watt 12 speaker system to all the collage students.

Once I start the install, I'll post pictures. I'm currently working on a smaller one for him now and will post it up as well once I finish and have a chance to dowload all the pictures.

Just a few pictures to show everyone what im working with. Started deconstruction so the inside looks a little rough but it's nothing more then a few cushions moved around. It's going to be challenging but should be fun as well.

Got the amps in today but ended up with something different then what I originally had thought. Seems the owner got a good deal on 2 Sundown SAX-1200d's and a Cadence ZRS-C9. I still think we should be ok on power. The 1200D's can be linked together to pull a little over 2100 watts and the C9 will make 160watts x 4 at 2 ohms.

So the 1200D's are stable to a 1ohm load at 1200w or you can link two for a total of 2150w into a 2ohm load.

Should I wire a pair of 12's to each amp at 1ohm or link the two amps togther and wire all 4 for a 2ohm load?

Greyhound isn't the only private intercity bus in town: Canada-based QuickShuttle makes the run from SeaTac to Vancouver, picking up and dropping off at it's "downtown" streetside location in the shadow of the Space Needle, next to the Best Western Executive Inn at 6th. Ave N and John St. While their location is closer to where I live, it would make sense to consolidate bus lines in one location. But then again, maybe QS is perfectly content to stay where they are. Ticketing is all on-line, via phone, or from the hotel desk.

Thank you for your valuable and very relevant input.
