Using ports that arent flared...

no flare = port turbulence = distortion = ****
That is a bit of a generality. I've heard plenty of home audio subs that didn't have a flared port and had no port noise. Port noise is a actor of port area and the ammount of air moving in and out of the port. A nice big flare will reduce turbulence and the likelyhood of noise in a marginally sized port. If the port is large enough for the sub and the power going to it, there is no real need for a flare. Break the hard edges and you should be good.
