Using high level from tv to 3.5mm headphone

doesnt your tv have a headphone jack. If it does, thats your best bet. But yes, as long as the positive goes the positve and the negative goes to the negative than you should be OK. However if your tv amplifier is really weak, you might actually lose sound. the speakers inside tv cabinets are built for the purpose of clear dialogue, and if you alter that, you might lose the clarity.
