Using HDD on Xbox360

Currently I'm using my 40gig portable HDD on my 360 to playback some TV rips I've got on there, works fine for me.

Problem is, I want to go to a larger HDD to throw some HD rips on there, and as far as I know, Xbox360 will only recognize FAT32 and, supposedly HFS+, which is an Apple format from what I understand. FAT32 works fine on the drive I have now, but it will not recognize files over 4GB.

Anyone have experience using HFS+ format on a 360?

nope, i jus stream the stuff from my computer via windows media connect.
I tried doing that, but had issues playing back files, then gave up and used my HDD.

If I use Windows Media Connect from my laptop, I can stream wirelessly as long as it's on the same network, correct? Or does the 360 have to have a direct ethernet connection to the computer?

i have my 360 hooked up directly to my computer. then my computers wifi connection is shared and thats how I use xbox live //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I never have problems watching videos/picture slideshows/listening to music on my 360..

that is correct, should be able to stream them so long as you have the avi codec d/led or if you have them in wmv format you wont need the codec. let me know if you have any problems w/ windows media connect. i'll help ya with it tonight after work if necessary. pretty simple to set up.

only problem i ever have is if im using up a bunch of my networks bandwidth by d/ling or something.

so.. you're telling me I can hooked my external hard drive up to my 360 via USB & it'll work.. as long as the drive is FAT32?
it appears thats what he's saying. i personally have not tried it.

I'm going to try it quick when I get home.

I got it to work a while ago w/ my laptop, but it kept freezing while browsing subfolders, so just switched to the HDD route.

like i said, just try to make sure you have as much bandwidth available as possible. i generally have mine organized into Videos>Movies>AVI or WMV

sometimes it takes a few seconds to see the sub folders but it doesnt take too long.

I have no problem streaming very large files, I dont use the Windows media center crap, but use the plug in for windows media player, it works much better and uses up alot less bandwidth.

you can go wireless to wireless, or a computer connected to the network by cat5 ( ie to the modem or router ) to wireless or vice versa.

This is one feature that I absolutley love about the 360, and a piece of software that microsoft actually got right

this isn't going to help much, but since you want to upgrade i will point out the FAT32 will only recognize up to a 137gb partition so if you get anything larger you will need to chop it up into numerous partitions

windows media player 11 has media connect built into it. i have never been able to get it to work sucessfully w/ my 360. i havent tried in over a year, they may have fixed the problem
