Using a DMM???

what are the basics to using a dmm???what are they used for???and how do you use them???...i've always wanted to know this and i found a dmm laying around my dad's shop i was wanting to know how to use it the right way

I personally use this DMM. It's a Fluke 29:

I use mine for:

AC/DC voltage

Resistance

Capacitance

Continuity

It's a must have if you decide to make car audio a hobby. Mine was a little pricey, but you can get decent one at Sear's for about $30

so how would you use it to find the resistance, capacitance, continuity, voltage, etc.....can it be used to find actual rms wattage coming from amp...or is that even possible

Did you notice the selector switch on mine? Each position indicates a different measurement ( ohms, volts, etc).

Mine will figure true RMS with a hand calculation.

use DC to measure voltages of batteries

use AC to measure voltage coming out of amp

use resistance to measure voice coils and what not

use capacitance to measure the size of capacitiors

basic electronic fundamentals

but when figuring the resistance do i place the negative pole to the - speaker terminal on the ampand positive pole to the + speaker terminal on the amp.....if so how would i go about finding the DC/AC

kicker comps....i'm pretty sure i've got it at 1ohm but not sure....i was just wantin to check.....woulld i have to have the music on to tell the resistance??

I bought mine at Graingers:

It has a selector rotary swith that you move to each function. Move the switch to DC volts and position the red probe on the = and the black probe on the - and it reads out DC voltage.

You move the same switch to the appropriate function and repeat.

how much was yours? cam u give me a direct link were i could see it plz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
