USB Playback

I have an Alpine CDE-121 head unit in my secondary vehicle and I’m trying to use the USB port to play music from a flash drive. I can’t get it to play just straight thru from song 1 to song 2319, it wants to cluster songs randomly in a folder and play just that folder. I didn’t create folders on the flash drive, I just made a list of 2300+ songs and copied them on to the flash drive. My primary vehicle is a 2016 Silverado and using the factory radio I can get it to play a flash drive straight thru. And in the 2000 Silverado I used to have, it had a pioneer head unit in it and it too would play a flash drive straight thru from song 1, 2, 3, etc. I say “song 1” but in all actuality the songs are being played alphabetically. So my question is with Alpine head unit, is there a way to play music straight thru like that, or does it not play music that way using the USB flash drive?

The Alpine CDE-121 head unit may have some limitations when it comes to USB playback, especially in how it organizes and plays music files. Here are a few things you can try to achieve your desired playback:

1. File Naming: Make sure the files are named in a way that they will sort alphabetically in the order you want them to play. For example, prefixing the song titles with numbers (e.g., "001 - Song Title.mp3", "002 - Song Title.mp3", etc.) can help ensure they play in the desired order.

2. Music Format: Ensure that the audio files are in a supported format (like MP3, WMA, etc.). Some formats may have compatibility issues.

3. USB Drive Formatting: Format the USB drive to FAT32. This is the most compatible format for many head units.

4. Root Directory: Place the music files directly in the root directory of the USB drive rather than in subfolders, as it seems you are already doing.

5. Random/Repeat Playback Settings: Check the head unit settings for any options related to playback modes. Some units have a random play or shuffle option that may need to be turned off.

6. Firmware Update: Check if there is a firmware update available for your Alpine head unit. Sometimes manufacturers release updates that fix bugs or add new features.

7. Consult the Manual: Refer to the user manual for specific instructions related to USB playback. It may have additional settings or features that can aid in your playback experience.

If you've tried all of the above and it still doesn't play in the order that you want, it may just be a limitation of the head unit itself. In that case, using a different device or head unit that allows for continuous play exactly as you desire might be necessary.

The Alpine you have listed is a low end Alpine and only plays USB drives formatted in FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32. Your Pioneer was most likely a much better head unit and recognized exFAT or NTFS. Plug your drive into a computer and check its properties to see what file type it is. I am guessing if it was made on anything with Windows 10 or newer it is exFAT.
