USB Flash Drive won't work on Pioneer x910bt

I have a Pioneer x910bt and I tried connecting a flash drive with .mp3's on it. The head unit just freezes and only the menu and map hardware buttons work. I tried a different flash drive, and it connected without freezing, but the unit won't recognize it as the USB option is not highlighted. They are both FAT32 formatted. There is an SD card slot, but I want to try and get the USB part working so I don't have to buy an SD card. I would appreciate some help on this matter.

The Sandisk Cruzer is a 4 GB and the Toshiba is an 8 GB.
