On the external HD note... USB thumb drivers are a lot hardier then HD's and are easier to move from place to place. Depends on the person and the specific usage as to which is better.

Here are two reputable drives IMHO, one is on sale and the other you got to wait a little for a rebate. The Kingston 8GB DataTraveler Flash Drive or CORSAIR Flash Voyager 16GB Flash Drive. I have a 1GB DataTraveler and its good!
