Urgent-Infinity speakers question

Hi everybody,

I have been offered a 5.25" component speakers by Infinity from the Kappa series. I was sure it is the 50.5cs but a second check showed it is a 50cs speakers. I looked at Infinity web site and saw there are 50, 50.1, 50.2, ... ,50.5 Kappa comps.

I wanted to know if the 50cs is the oldest model, if it is worst than all of the other ones and what its specs are.

Do you think it is a good choice to buy this comp? How is it compared to the 50.5cs? How old should be a set of 50cs? I was offered a new set sealed in the box but now I suspect it is in the box for a long period of time. What do you think about it?

Please help me asap because I need to return to this seller with my decision.

Thank you,

Ariel.

I think you are wrong because Infinity's web site states that there actually is (or was) a model called Kappa50CS. I just do not find its specs anywhere and do not know if it's an old one or not.

The ones that you mentioned, the 50.5cs ARE the 5.25" KAPPA series for that size. I work for the company so I DO know that much!!! Here are the Specs for that particular comp system:

Power Handling, RMS 85 Watts

Power Handling, Peak 255 Watts

Frequency Response (±3dB) 55Hz - 21kHz

Sensitivity 90dB

Impedance 4 Ohms

Mounting Depth 2-1/16"

General

Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragms™ with Plus One™ (patent-pending) – Infinity's Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm material is a major breakthrough in transducer-diaphragm technology. For tweeters, it offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes, moving the first significant breakup mode to the 30kHz region. For woofer and midrange applications, it offers pistonic operation over the entire usable range of the driver, completely eliminating colorations due to cone breakup modes and, thus, dramatically reducing distortion. Finally, the diaphragm will not deteriorate when exposed to moisture, sunlight or extreme temperatures, making ceramic metal matrix an ideal material for automotive applications. Each Kappa loudspeaker also features Plus One. This technology allows us to deliver a cone that is up to 30% larger than those in competing speakers of the same size. The result of this patent-pending technology is an audible increase in efficiency and bass output.

Cast-Polymer Speaker Baskets – Each Kappa model uses a nonconductive cast-polymer basket to ensure all magnetic energy is focused at the voice coil. This execution yields increased efficiency and midrange detail.

Computer-Optimized Voice-Matched Passive Crossover with Custom Contour™ – The Kappa 50.5cs comes with an outboard passive crossover that has been voice-matched to ensure that it will integrate seamlessly with other Kappa models. The Custom Contour feature allows you to vary the system''s response to compensate for speaker location and taste. This computer-optimized crossover ensures a flawless performance with incredible detail and accuracy.

I-Mount™ (patent no. 5,859,917) – This tweeter-mounting system is found on the 50.5cs, 60.5cs and 10.5t. It enables easy and versatile tweeter installation, whether surface, flush or angled.

I can usually answer any Questions reguarding Infinity product. If I can't, then I not ashamed to say I not, but I will try to get the answer.

I have already stated that I know the specs of the 50.5cs and I am looking for the specs of a model called Kappa50cs. I know there is such a model because I saw its name appearing in Infinity's web site but the specs of it do not appear there. Please try to help me find the Kappa50cs specs.

Thank you,

Ariel.

Here is the info that you wanted!!!

There is a big difference between the 50cs and 50.5cs.

The 50cs was last made in 1997, they used a polypropylene cone injected with a quartz material and a silk dome tweeter. Standard 12dB crossover network that was used at the time. The system sounded good, but we have made many changes in speakers since then.

The 50.5cs is the most current version of the Kappa speaker line. They use CMMD a proprietary metal cone technology that was developed by our home audio. Both the woofer and tweeter use this material, plus the woofer uses our patented Plus One cone (larger cone compared to

competitors) which means more output. Also the crossovers are computer optimized and voice matched for each speaker. They are not generic network boxes pulled off a shelf.

Hope this helps

so how are the Kappa50cs compared to the Reference 5000cs? Which one is better? Is the Kappa50cs a good buy for 100$ (new with warranty) or the Reference 5000cs is better? Is there any problem with a new set of speakers (sealed in the box) if its manufacturing date is about 4 years ago? May it have any age defects?

Waiting for your advice.

Thanks,

Ariel.

There are always improvments in technology as time goes by. To be honest, I don't know what the differences would be. Obviously age would be a factor. I personally would go with the older ones because they still have the warranty, they were the best then, and for the money, they are the best buy now. Besides, if they did happen to fail, Infinity maybe would give you a newer version of the kappa's to replace those. Right now the decision is up to you, your judgment, and personal preference.

I haven't heard either set, I have 6.5 Kappa Perfect Comps.
