Upgrade the Head Unit?

Hello everyone.

First let me say that I have an Alpine CDA-9805 and a pretty good system, if I say so myself (see signature). I have had the Alpine CDA-9805 for over a year and just recently thought about upgrading it.

I really have no idea about how a head unit affects the sound of the system. I have been happy with my CDA-9805 but maybe I'm only happy because I don't know there's better out there. And recently I have began to think that the quality of my stereo greatly surpasses that of the head unit.

What kinds of advantages are there for upgrading the head unit?
