Underrated amps?

the brand that started the under rating game....Phoenix Gold

there old mps amps were and are still known for that.

the mps2500 was rated at 50x2, for some reason th eamp was over 17 incehs long though:)

the ms amps were pretty under rated also

The new RF Power series are severely underrated. My T4004 is rated at 25x4 RMS at 14.4v and puts out 98x4 RMS at 14.4v on the birth sheet. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/awesome.gif.4430a219d9aaaa6cadc75e9290979dfb.gif

i always wondered, rockford probably wanted to make a 100x4 amp, and if it benched at 98x4, people would say the amp isn't that great, but if rockford markets it as a 25x4 amp, it's so great cause it is underrated

I could totally understand that logic. I was originally looking for a 75x4 amp that is 1-ohm stable. My most cost-effective options were the PG Ti500.4 (or ZX475) or this one. I found this one BNIB for pretty cheap, so I went for the T4004. 25, 98, 100 watts, whatever.. it does what I need to - drive a pair of 6.5" DIY 4-ohm passive components up front and a IDMAX 12D4 off the bridged rear channels. Kinda surprising how well the 'Max does with only about 350-400 watts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Now back on topic.. the Rockford Power series is definitely underrated. The size of the amps kinda gives away their potential, though - my rated 25x4 is 13"x16". Not small at all.

My Orion Xtreme XTR-100 is rated at 50W x 2 but it is 20 inches long, and is a dual mono block design with balanced inputs. I think it does a little more than its rated power. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

What's the big deal with underrated amps? I can call a Sony X-plod a five watt amp, when in fact it's a 25. That doesn't make it a better amp.

I'd rather manufacturers rate things accurately. It's not like these days, there's any reason not to.

well we all wish that they would just tell it how it is but sadly thats not how things work. Would you wanna buy a 150x2 amp and really get 600+rms out of it and pay less then a $100 or would you wanna buy something that says 600rms and pay 100+ for the same wattage but the difference is one says it and the other one doesn't. Or buy something that says 1000 watts and only pushes 600 when you paid for 600. Im just trying to get the best deal. Thanks for all the replies. Anybody know any cheap amps for sale?

that is nothing compared to the phoenix gold mps2500, its rated at 50rms x2 puts out about 600rms or so

the reason they did that was because they were called "cheater amps" in the 90's the rules for competitions were alot different then they are now
