I am "in" the IT field. That does not mean that's all I do. I also run an engineering company where I design and build reproduction parts for VWs, personally.
The reason a "square" hole is not as good as a round one is due to the radius on the circle. A radius will build a stronger part. Contrary to most engineering texts, a well designed "square" or rectangle port will actually flow more than a comparable sized round port.
Keep your place in the food chain. Working for your boss and supporting your infrastructure sounds like its right up your alley.
