Tuning ported enclosures to 30 hz

Do you guys prefer tuning boxes down to 30 hz versus higher frequencies like 38 hz. If I were to redo my box in my truck and tune it lower, how is it going to sound with rock and country? I know it will sound great with rap and r&b but that's not the genre I primarily listen too. Mostly rock, some modern country, little rap. I got the Rockford P3 and a Hifonics 1600.1D I can jam it with. Plenty of power. How much power can those P3s realistically handle. Says 600rms, my Hifonics at 2 ohm produces 1200 watts rms. Getting serious about redoing my box and ditching the prefab. I should be getting it to sound much better correct with a custom box.

Well it produces 1200@2 ohms but what do you have it wired to? No sub can handle its peak power for rms for any extended period of time. Also for rock i'd recommend anywhere from 38-43Hz tuning, possibly a sealed box since bass lines in rock and country tend to be punchier and less boomy than rap.

Well, my current box is a prefab box tuned to 38 hz at 1.81 cu ft. Rockford Fosgate recommeds 38 hz at 1.79 cu ft. and honestly doesn't sound that bad really, so I'm there but all the guys here say it would sound better with a custom box. But the guys on this board tell me it's a crap box. Plus, I'm thinking about removing the box behind the seat and redo one in the center seating area. I think I can remove that center seat between the bucktets and do a nice console style box and amp rack in between.

The sub is wired to 2 ohm and Rockford says 600rms, not max. The Hifonics produces 1200 watts rms at 2 ohm mono, 1600 watts rms 1 ohm mono.

That's weird... I could swear that'd fry it. Do you keep the gains low?

Also, pretty much everybody on here has a burning hatred for prefabs, but it'd true the enclosure is almost everything. A custom box built to RF's specs would work nicely, or chat it up with a pro box builder on here for some different specs. Just bring them the ideas and see what they think, if you just say "design me a box" they'll want money. And truthfully you wouldn't hear any difference by building a box thats .2 cubes smaller.

No, i still have the rockford 801S amp on it, turned down a bit too. Hasn't fried yet and had it in truck a year. I'm just saying I have the Hifonics amp I can run on it. And if the Hifonics is too much for the sub. I can go with a Threatcon 2 or even Threatcon 4. If I go a center style box between the seats then I should have plenty of mounting depth for just about any speaker I want. I don't have to use the P3.

It's a p3 and that's close to recommended, so unless his box is flexing horribly or giving him port noise it may not be a bad box. Good to know all the internet guru's know just how it sounds.

That being said for rock and country being your predominant listening material, I'd be more inclined to a sealed enclosure as it's likely to have a much flatter response that what your dealing with now. I mean if your one of those guys who jams to rock and country with the bass way louder than everythign else regardless, then disregard. If you keep it fairly close to blending with a bit of extra kick, then sealed may be a good choice, depends if you want or need the extra output.

Still tuning lower will flatten your response out some and as well as keep extra output way down low for rap, so that's why it's a decent compromise.

I was thinking 38hz was a compromise between the two. To me, right now, it does sound good with Rock. I have a sealed box with 2 12s in the ***** Am and yes, another prefab box and honestly, I may not be getting the spl in the truck but overall, sounds better. I'm getting punch and low bass. Not that much low bass in the ***** Am, lots of high bass and tight bass. The ***** Am needs a new box too to get it really right.

The box in the truck itself is nice and sturdy. But I could use the added leg room by taking that box out and going with a center console type enclosure.
