Was looking through some Ebay ads for Mono amps for my 2 subwoffers and came across this statement.

**************************************************************

Please note, one of the major advantages of a mono amplifier is that you can hook it up to 1, 2, 3, or even 4 subs, and get equal power to each sub. Mono amplifiers are designed specifically for bass, so you can be sure you will get more bass power out of it than an ordinary 2 channel amp.

**************************************************************

Can someone explain this to me. How does a mono amp send power differently to mulitple subs compared to a 2 channel amp?

Thanks

Biker

There's no difference in the actual power being sent to the subs between a mono and 2 or more channel amp. There is however a difference between a "class D mono amp" and an ordinary 2 channel. Class D amplifiers generate their power more efficiently then a class a/b (most 2 or more channel amps a few mono amps). You will get cleaner power out of class A/B, but not a big difference when just dealing with subwoofers. What subs do you have and what amp are you looking to get?

Havent decided on the Subs or Amp yet, just trying to sort through the bullshit before I make a decesion.

Heres another one......... From the previous Ebay ad above talking about power I just noticed that before he posts any Amp specs he states.

Rms Power @ 17V DC

What the hell is that? How am I going to get 17 Volts from my 12 V Battery?

Thanks

Biker

Sounds like one of the HK-series MA Audio amps if it is rated to output its RMS rating when given 17vdc. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

And you're not going to supply that amp 17vdc with an average electrical system. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

OK so lower Voltage = Lower RMS power. OK so I guess im stupid. So do they make 17 V Car batteries?

OK and what is a Class X Mono amp?

Thanks Biker

OK so lower Voltage = Lower RMS power.
It will depend on the amplifier in question. The majority of amps out there, regardless of manufacturer, would fall under that generalization. The amount to which output is affected as compared to voltage input will depend on the power supply in the amp. While other amps (such as my Diamond Audio monoblock) make their rated power at any voltage input from 11vdc to 14.6vdc or so.

So do they make 17 V Car batteries?
Quite frankly I wouldn't know. It will have more to do, however, with your alternator. The battery is nothing more than an energy storage container and will not have within it anything that wasn't put there by the alternator. If your alternator isn't outputting its amperage at 17 volts then you're not going to be able to feed 17 volts into your amp(s) regardless of what type of battery you use.
OK and what is a Class X Mono amp?
I don't know that either.

Thanks a lot, OK one more question and I will leave you all alone.

Ive decided to use a 2 channel amp bridged mono for 600 Watts at 4 ohms. To 2 10 inch subs rated at 350 Watts RMS. Totaling 4 ohm load.

Question is , What is a Subsonic Filter and should I turn it on or off?

Thanks

Just be certain the subs are of the proper voice coil configuration to be able to be wired to a 4 Ohm final load. A pair of DVC 4 Ohm subs could be but a pair of DVC 2 Ohm subs could not and neither could a pair of SVC 4 Ohm subs.

A subsonic filter is a high-pass filter but for use at rather low frequencies. It is designed to keep frequencies too far below the tuning frequency of a ported enclosure from reaching the sub(s) as to prevent overexcursion. If you run a sealed enclosure you won't need to activate this.

it is best not to learn car audio from ebay auctions.

17V can be obtained with the 16V racing batteries (higher voltage gives a hotter spark or such)

alternately, the setpoint on some alternators could be adjusted. this is dangerous as the alternator nor battery are designed for such use, and may have a significantly lower lifespan.
