trying to figure out whats wrong new instal wont power on... 1994 Honda civic after market head unit. Been in my car in 85 degree weather for 6 hours have the classic one arm sun burn still not made any progress. I started out with my head unit plugged in according to the wiring diagram still nothing happening stared at it for literally hours trying to figure out what went wrong. Finally I tried to googled it. Found out how to test me head unit on my battery did that and the head unit works fine thank god its brand new... Then went on reading some more found out I did not have a 12v consistent power cable. The one I thought was it was a white cable blue stripe still not sure what thats for. I starting thinking about it its probably because my crack head friend installed my engine and transmission. Then I decided to run a cable from my battery to my head through the firewall hole my 0 gauge is in. Did that turned it on and it worked. Turned off the car it went off with the car turned it back on it came back on. All good then I take the harness off get out strip more of the wire that I just had sitting on the battery before... properly put that on there better so it will not fall off. get back in the car. Re-hook my harness back to my head unit go to try again and now it won't work at all... I replaced the 15a fuse 4 times in the whole process so I know its not that...

Maybe the power wire is too small or not hooked up right is there a video or a picture someone can show me on how to hook it up? Right now I am using a left over I believe 16-18 gauge wire that came in my old amp kit.

Thanks for any help...

get yourself a dmm and test the wires to see what they are reading. My money is on you having a popped fuse. Check under the hood for the radio fuse. I believe it should be a 7.5 value. I also think that extra wire you have is actually the constant wire for that car.

I'm sure more knowledgeable people will chime in when they have a chance, but the first thing you should have when installing an aftermarket head unit is the appropriate wiring harness. Then you splice each wire to the appropriate wire coming off the head unit harness. If it wasn't turning on initially, chances are it was wired wrong. There shouldn't be so much guess work, the instructions for the harness will tell you what color is what. Typically blue/white is remote power for a powered antennae or amp to tell the device to turn on when the HU does.

Do you have a wiring harness? Something like this?

I don't know too much about the stock electrical pathways in cars, but 16-18 AWG seems small running that all the way from the battery.

i don't have any thing hooked to the blue wire because i don't have a amp hooked up right now could that be why?

I did get a wiring diagram for my car and I printed one off line. The cables I have on the back of my wiring harness from the after market head unit already have labels saying what they need to hook up too.

Thanks!

The blue/white wire doesn't need to be hooked up if you don't need it.

I'm not sure I have my terminology here right so I'll just break it down. There should be a plug consisting of all the wiring for the speakers, power, etc. that plugged into the back of your old head unit that most likely won't work for your aftermarket HU. The wiring harness you purchase separately is a sort of adapter that facilitates making sure all the wires go to the right spot in the new head unit.

How did you make the connections? My head unit came with a plug with a bunch of bare wires hanging out the back. I then spliced these to the harness I purchased for my make and model, then the other end simply connected to the plug for the old HU.

id be willing to bet the factory harness is hacked off.

good call on the 7.5 went out there and it was blown.... wow thats crazy I would have never have figured out that back up could be something to do with the stereo i need to go buy some fuses replace it and i will keep you updated once i try it out.

Thanks!

I tried to use the normal blue white wire and the other wire I wired still no luck. its darkish out side but it didn't seem to make a difference. I can double check again in the AM

any other suggestions?

Hahaha //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif i love seeing how people start off as i was the same.

Blue wire with white stripe is your battery/memory wire (12v constant)

Yellow wire with red stripe is your ignition wire (12v switched)..

Once you have it connected check fuses #10 & #18 ..

#10 = 7.5a fuse

#18 = 15a fuse

Both are used for the radio, #10 is radio illumination & #18 is the actual radio power. Both need to be checked.

Also make sure the negative battery is disconnected while you do all this.

After you should be good to go..

Also check under the hood fuse #36 just incase for the relay power and if you look under your dash find fuse #11 and check that also
