toyota avalon stock 10cd changer problem

my mom's 1997 avalon xls 12cd changer (trunk located) has stopped working. when trying to play a cd the screen shows "LOAD" for a few seconds then cuts back to the radio. my dad has cleaned the changer with a kit he bought, and it did nothing. any suggestions to troubleshoot the problem? thanks.
