Top mount vs. bottom mount?

I am going to be getting a sub, and I'm confused as to which numbers I need to be paying attention to. I have a box that is cubed, no angles or anything. The mounting depth of the box is 4". I'm looking at a sub with a top mount depth of 3 15/16" and a bottom mount depth of 4 11/16". The different numbers mean the difference between the sub fitting and not fitting. Which spec should I be looking at? Thanks!

IIRC cubed boxes aren't good because they can create standing waves...could be wrong

Also, it would help to know exactly what sub your talking about

It's not a perfect cube, I was more or less just saying that to mean that there was no slanted surface, so mounting depth is the same throughout the box. As for the sub, it is the Polk Audio MM840:
