Too much power for Koda 10

I was thinking of getting a Koda 10 and was wondering if 400w rms will be too much power for it. I already have the amp, RF Power 800.4, which I am bridging two of the channels for the sub. I'm interested in SQ and I've read a lot of good things about the Koda.

The Koda's are super efficient and don't need that much power. However by turning the gain down you shouldn't have a problem. I'm only running one channel of my Arc 1500dr (200 rms rated IIRC) right now to one and it get's pretty loud in my Brahma 10 enclosure.

Ditto. I can attest to the efficiency. 400w RMS to a Koda10 in a sealed box with the gains turned down should be fine. However, I wouldn't recommend 400w RMS if you had it in a ported box. I have mine in a super efficient box right now, and 200w RMS is already making it pretty d@mn loud and can already get distorted easily if I push it.

Steven Kephart, do you mean you have a Koda10 right now in a Brahma 10 Subzero enclusure? If so, how does it sound??(the low end, particularly.) I almost got one of those special Brahma enclosures, but ended up putting my Koda10 in a "typical" sealed box, and dampened the interior..the high and midbass were some of the most accurate I've heard, but there just wasn't any low end.

Have you had any experience with a Brahma10? If I put one in my current box(the box in my avatar), do you think 200w RMS is enough to drive it to full excursion?? (being really optimistic here.....)

I suppose I should have expounded on that. I just didn't want to put a bunch of non-relevant information in there. But it sounds like I created more confusion than I meant to.

Anyway, it is mounted in the center console enclosure I built for my Brahma 10. Here's some pictures of it. The enclosure is .36 cubic feet sealed. This is way too small for the Koda 10 as it does have a peaky response. It would also be less efficient in this enclosure. But this will make due till I can make my prototype Tumult 10. It's going to be fun to have a 10" sub with a 9" diameter motor structure in there. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I've owned a Brahma 10 ever since it was originally released. I have always used a tiny enclosure for it, and ran it for a while with only 500 watts. There wasn't that much of a jump in output when I moved up to the larger amplifier.

What size enclosure is that? Keep in mind that the Brahma 10 requires a super tiny enclosure. A large ported box for it is around 1 cubic feet. On page 8 of my website you will see a ported B10 I did. The enclosure is 1.49 cubic feet tuned to 30 Hz and gets pretty loud on a small Phoenix Gold amp. However the enclosure is a little large so I'm thinking of stuffing it to reduce the space.

It measures 33inches wide, 11.5 inches high and 18 inches deep. If my calculations are correct, that is close to 4cubic foot gross. Am I right? Net volume after driver displacement, port displacement, boards, etc, I believe is around 3cubic foot? Most likely less.

I can run my amp at either 200w RMS @4ohms, or 500w RMS @1ohm for a Brahma10. What do you think?

The Brahma 10 is not a drop-in driver into a Koda 10 enclosure. The Koda 10's efficiency comes at the cost of enclosure size requirements. You could stuff the enclosure to reduce it's size, but you will also have to adjust the port otherwise your tuning will go up. If you can find some specifics on your enclosure (port size, etc.), you can e-mail our tech support and they will help you get that enclosure to work with a Brahma 10 if you would like.

Steven, what would be the optimal box size for the Koda 10. I currently have one that is around .8 sealed, but I was thinking of building another one since it looks like sh*t.

May I ask... why are you running a Koda 10 over the Brahma now? Especially if the enclosure size is suited to the B. Just wanted to downgrade your power requirements?

BTW, -LOVE- your center console enclosure. I saw pics of it before and was trying to remember who inverted a Brahma10 under their dash... it was you. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif The Brahma looks so sweet there.

Oh and... why are you not offering a Tumult 10? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif The new Brahma wont be what it use to be, and the Tumult wont come in a 10 (or so Ive read...?). So I guess the old Brahma 10's are gonna be pretty sought after. B10's are one of my all time favorite subs, and that's a short list. It will be missed.

Off the top of my head, I can't remember what the enclosure sizes for a given alignment was. I think .8 sealed should work pretty good. But it would be best to contact techsupport@adireaudio.com with your listening tastes and they should help you design an optimal enclosure for your install.

We had a customer that REALLY wanted a Brahma, and didn't care that it was used. So we sold it. I wanted some tunes in the car, so I grabbed one of the Koda prototypes off the shelf and installed it in my car.

I suppose my other answer could have been................ Because the Parthenon wouldn't fit. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Well thanks. Maybe one of these days I will actually finish it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

We felt it to be impractical to have a 10" driver with a 9" diameter motor. It's just way too much motor for such a small speaker physically and performance wise.
