if i run 1500 watts to my JL 12w3's, rated at 300rms , and i turn my gains all the way down and the bass off heaadunit all the way down do you think ill still nlow them?

those are actually rated at 600 RMS per JL's website.

Sealed or ported?

Sealed will handle more power - IMO

If you ran an actual 1500 watts, then you would probably blow them. If you set your gains to an amount they will handle then no you won't blow them. Just set your bass on your headunit to flat and tune your amp with a DMM to 600 to 800 watts (or more if you want, but just be careful)

You are not going to actually get a true 1500rms out of the amp, unless you reach the 14.4v on a continual base.That would be with the HO alt and big three upgrade , along with a set of good batteries.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif you will be just fine,i believe

really? the gain settings adjust how many watts come out of the amp? That is news to me.

it regulates how many watts come out of the amp. thats why when you use a DMM you use the math to figure out the wattage the amp will put out at the certain voltage on the DMM (i know my terminology is all screwy, but you get what i mean)

Nah They are the oldest 12w3d4's, they dont even have them up on the JL site their so old. But anyways how do i tune to DMM like whats the math equation?

(Target watts) x (ohm load) then take the square root of this number.

So if you had an amp that did 1500 @ 1 ohm, you would do 1500 x 1 then square root of 1500 (something like 38)

Now you take this number, and go to your amp. Unplug your speakers, turn the gain down and set all your basses to flat. Put in a 50 hz test tone and adjust the gain until you reach the number you got from square rooting.
