To much power to sub

because you can probably clip ONE jl 500/1 to produce close to 1000 watts easily...
my question is... is the power from a clipped amp at 1000 watts the same as the power from an honest 1000 watt amp? or is there such a thing as a "dirty" signal that would kill a coil...
the clipped signal is dirty. you got the concept.

a distorted signal does not damage speakers.

now if the speaker itself is distorting due to exceeding mechanical limits, that's different. but a distorted signal does not damage speakers; it just doesn't sound good.

you still haven't answered my question about whether a clipped signal is DC or not, because it most certainly is not //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

alright, makes sense... so a 1000 watt clipped signal and a 1000 watt clean signal, although are the same wattage, the one signal can cause the woofer to fail because the coil is seeing a square wave?
no, that is incorrect.

care to explain? sounds accurate to me
a speaker can only be damaged by exceeding it's mechanical or thermal power handling limits. if 1000 watts of power is received, whether it's clipped or not, and this is below both of those limits, the speaker will not be damaged.

has anyone here actually played an extremely clipped signal, measured the power produced, and verified that this was below those limits when the speaker was damaged?

i doubt it because i have tested this before and many others have before as well. in fact, a basic beginning in electrical engineering will teach you this lesson very quickly.

than why would ppl spend a 500 on a good amp when they can buy an itty bitty one for a 100 and clip it?

You just had a conversation where you read that the clipped signal is now a very dirty signal. It will not damage the driver, but it is still dirty. So why on earth would anyone want to send a shitty signal to thier drivers in hopes of a good sound?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

i know that, i was seeing what the other guys response was to that question... i know the answer

seems that some things were left out

While the sub is playing the clipped part of the signal, the speaker is not moving. it is being held in a steady position for just a few milliseconds, every cycle. That does not provide proper cooling to the coil as well, causing a sub that is given signal (Clipped) measured below the speakers thermal rating, and causing it to fail.

a sub is typically less than 1% efficient anyways, so this "added cooling" from excursion during a sine wave is moot. almost all power is lost thermally anyways, so that's a very inaccurate argument, although the one most commonly used. there are also several tests that have corroborated this information, showing that speakers routinely died at the same power level, whether they were clipped or un-clipped.

Im willin to bet 25 of your 45 post are on clippin:p:
