that'll work also...

x2 on what scooby said. Also, download and install WinPatrol, that ways everything that makes changes to your system you will be alerted to and be able to allow or disable. Pretty small app.

Basically I uncheck everything except for antivirus and maybe something like Daemon tools. You dont NEED anything other than AV software/firewall running when windows boots up. Also, disable most of the services under the services tab (however make sure to check hide all MS services) other than those related to AV. PM if you would like a more detailed walkthrough.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

Go to the "processes" tab.

In the bottom left there is a number of running items.

Windows only needs like 13 to function. Try to get that number to 20-35 range by doing what Scoobydoo said, or deleting programs you no longer use.

I've seen poor bastards with like 80 running processes, that'll zap most of your performance.

You could go the overclocking route but unless your good at comps I wouldn't fool with it you can burn up the proccessor or the MB if you dont have good cooling. You can download some apps like tweakXP which can turn different windows functions off and on and take up less resources

honestly thats the only thing i tell windows users anymore

sadly the only thing that straightens all that crap out //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

My XP pro install is 4 years old now. Only problem I have is a file on my desktop that doesn't exsist...so it's not deletable //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

If you any smarter than a brain damamged two year old you don't even need the AV/Firewall...

Run AVG (free antivirus) to scan downloaded files, and don't open email attachments are obviously viruses... people overplay the threat quite a bit

As for the firewall NAT is good enough to stop 99.9% of hackers... not to mention most people don't have serious personal info on their computers to protect anyways...

As for getting windows to run smoother/faster

1) Re-install windows, don't load programs you don't need to be running (use winconfig)

2) DO NOT INSTALL NORTON PRODUCTS ON YOUR COMPUTER
