I just don't understand why they want the furthest speaker away to be at 0 distance. I followed these steps exactly:

Because the furthest speaker away is the baseline for the rest of the speakers. Since you are not delaying it, it becomes 0. The other speakers get "pushed out" because 1. high frequencies travel faster and 2. so that the distance matches the furthest speaker.
