My buddy has them in his truck. Amazing speakers. He has no sub and doesn't need one. Aside from the added punch you'd get from a sub, the low frequency range is still there with those speakers.
The V-mags are Cerwin Vega's better speakers. Unfortunately, they don't come in a 6x9. 6.5" diameter is the largest size. But you can always get some adapter plates.
I have the 6.5" V-mags in my car. They're really outstanding speakers for the price. Nothing even comes close. Unless you're willing to spend at least double the price of the Cerwin Vegas, then you can't possibly do better.
