Why do you feel that this is bad for baseball? Steinbrenner bought the Yankees with the intention to bring winning back to New York. He makes less than a lot of the teams owners, but he doesn't mind that, why? Because they win. Hell, if I had the money Steinbrenner had, and owned a baseball team, any sports team without a cap, I'd do the same thing. Plus, true, their payroll is higher than any baseball teams, but they pay out more to compensate for the small market teams (forgot the name of the stipulation baseball set forth). Regardless if you are not a Yankees fan (I personally am not one of their fans), the fact that they are willing to spend money to better their team, and get wins, is respectable. I personally am a Braves fan, and I only wish we had an owner the caliber of Steinbrenner. He's comitted to winning, not making money. When you win, the money comes. Plain and simple, people say its bad for baseball, but they are just jealous that their team couldn't land the best player in baseball. Hell, I'm jealous, but you know what I can do? Nothing, except hope that the Braves follow suit, and land a big free agent (they usually go for the semi-talented budget players). The best thing for baseball would be if every team had the same mentality, and would committ to winning, regardless of the amount of money spent. A lot of the upper echelon sports teams have a lot less income than some of the small market mediocre teams. But, they win. It depends on where your heart is, winning and having success, or not winning very much, and making a whole lot of money. Granted, there will be those sleeper teams that have the low payroll, but which teams are more consistent? I like this move. And I think its good for baseball. Plus, the Yanks aren't gonna be deferring any of his contract. The Rangers will pay $67 million of it, but the Yanks won't restructure the contract in any way. Good for you Steinbrenner.
