This is why no one likes baseball

if this deal goes through i'm done watching baseball. adding rodriguez to the yankees will put there payroll over 200 million and my beloved tigers is only a 40 million payroll. this is a shame. the yankees are driving baseball down the shitter.

Yet another example of unions run amok...
It's a game you morons, you make millions of dollars to play a game that kids play for fun. What's the big deal if you make a mil or two less next year. You can't spend it all anyway.
it's not the amount but the gap between the big market teams and small market. the twins payroll i think is 20-30 million and if the yankees add rodriguez they will be over 200 million. how can these small market teams compete? as soon as one of their prospects becomes good, they leave for a team like the yankees who throw a lot of cash at them and the small market team has to start over again

It says that the union didn't approve the trade to the BoSox because it would devalue A-Rod's contract, basically he would take a paycut. His contract is already the biggest one ever, wah, wah, wah. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

i getcha now. i thought you were calling us morons for *****ing about the trade to new york. it seems like the yankees are giving up less in soriano than boston was in ramirez. i guess texas is mainly looking to dump salary. if i were the yankees i would trade soriano for rodriguez in a heart beat.

Why do you feel that this is bad for baseball? Steinbrenner bought the Yankees with the intention to bring winning back to New York. He makes less than a lot of the teams owners, but he doesn't mind that, why? Because they win. Hell, if I had the money Steinbrenner had, and owned a baseball team, any sports team without a cap, I'd do the same thing. Plus, true, their payroll is higher than any baseball teams, but they pay out more to compensate for the small market teams (forgot the name of the stipulation baseball set forth). Regardless if you are not a Yankees fan (I personally am not one of their fans), the fact that they are willing to spend money to better their team, and get wins, is respectable. I personally am a Braves fan, and I only wish we had an owner the caliber of Steinbrenner. He's comitted to winning, not making money. When you win, the money comes. Plain and simple, people say its bad for baseball, but they are just jealous that their team couldn't land the best player in baseball. Hell, I'm jealous, but you know what I can do? Nothing, except hope that the Braves follow suit, and land a big free agent (they usually go for the semi-talented budget players). The best thing for baseball would be if every team had the same mentality, and would committ to winning, regardless of the amount of money spent. A lot of the upper echelon sports teams have a lot less income than some of the small market mediocre teams. But, they win. It depends on where your heart is, winning and having success, or not winning very much, and making a whole lot of money. Granted, there will be those sleeper teams that have the low payroll, but which teams are more consistent? I like this move. And I think its good for baseball. Plus, the Yanks aren't gonna be deferring any of his contract. The Rangers will pay $67 million of it, but the Yanks won't restructure the contract in any way. Good for you Steinbrenner.

Steinbrenner doesn't have to worry about putting out a competitive team in order to make money; the Yankees already have the most lucrative TV contract, not to mention their merchandise sales are through the roof. The influx of money from that alone is enough to cover the luxury tax they have to pay (60 million last year, higher than nearly half of the other teams salaries). My problem isn't really with Steinbrenner himself, it's with the MLB and the Player's Union. Small market teams HAVE to be competitive in order to sell products, get TV time, and increase attendance. Even then, it's not guaranteed to work. Look at the Marlins last year, they were in the heat of a pennant race and still couldn't draw more than 10,000 fans per game. But large market teams don't have to worry about this, all they have to do is play and their hats and jerseys will sell and their stadium will be sold out. That's easy money in their pockets, which results in it being so much easier to sign free agents. And since the Player's Union just about demands that people take as much money as they can get, it's very unlikely that a player will be allowed to go to a market where he is being underpaid. But small market teams need a few of these players in order to be competitive, but they need lots of money in order to sign these players, but they have to be competitive before they can get the money. It's nothing but a huge cycle of greed. And then factor in the utter ridiculousness of some of the players contracts and there being no salary cap (after all, the only markets who are truly affected by the luxury tax have the $$ to cover it), and you've got an even bigger mess. Baseball needs serious changes.

Interesting....the owner of a baseball team doesnt mind making as much as he could because he WANTS his baseball team to win. When is the last time you heard an athlete settling for a fair amount only because he would rather win than get paid an ungodly amount to play a sport. Still dont see how some of these athletes can sit there and say they just want to win and its not all about the salary. In my opinion i lose respect for these money hungry players that try to justify them getting paid millions for something they dont neccessarily care if they win but rather how they do as an individual. Guess just thats the way its gonna be as long as we promote it.

Well first of all, it's all supply and demand. Yes, it's a shitload of money, but yes someone can write those paychecks and still turn a profit. From a business standpoint, there's nothing wrong at all. I'd rather make 10 million a year than 5 million. Why? It's more.

As far as baseball, the players don't even have a choice. The Player's Unions is crazy about the players getting paid at market value. So if one team offers a player 20 million a year, the Union will not approve said player going to a team unless he's making roughly that amount or more.
