Thinking about 8s - How would it compare to 12s?

Ive never had a nice 8 before, but im seeing these little DD 8s around and apparently they can get loud? Im really considering trying out a pair, or more than two maybe.

I am just wondering tho, how would two little 1508 DDs compare to a pair of CVR 12s? Lets assume both pairs of subs are in the ideal box and supplied the right amount of power.

Also, what kind of boxes do the 1508s like? I am kinda limited on space, which pushes me to wana try the little things out. But i dont want to be disappointed, even if its loud for an 8, i want it to hit pretty hard. So im thinking i may be better off with something bigger. What are your thoughts?

Maybe just go with a set of 10s? Im really wanting to get some DD subs tho. Right now i just got the 12" CVRs.

well i have one DD1508 but its in a miata and it hits decent for an 8. It peaks really well around its rated tuning about 35-40 hz. But i have it tuned way down to try and hit the lower notes. It can hit most of the low notes i play pretty well but once in the lower/ mid 20 frequencies it has some troubles. IF you have enough room id say go for a pair of 8s because even in my miata one 8 isn't enough(kind of used to 2 10s in friends set up), but I don't have enough space.

Well, what kind of power are you looking at?

Could should, theorhetically, be able to run four of those 8's (at least and you SHOULD be able to run more) in the space you have those two 12" CVR's in...

But those 1508's will handle as much power as those CVR's too, lol

Ive seen low 140s with single DD1508's ported in hatches off ~1kwrms

the 1508 will take way more power than the cvr's will. i send the one in my ava 1k daily with no issues at all. i had that sub in a bronco for a while and high 138's on burps.

for an 8, they are one of the best and very hard to beat but compairing them to 12" is really not fair. if you have the power, run 3 if you can and you should be quite suprised. give them about .75cuft each and tune near 38-40hz.

as far as cone area is concerned 2 8's has less area then 1 12 so it'll be difficult to get 2 8's louder than 2 12's unless you have gobs of power going to the 8's. 4 8's against 2 12's would be a much more fair fight.

I heard a JL 8W3v3 in their ready made slot ported box in big open showroom with 250 watts going to it (JL 250/1) and it shocked the hell out of me.

but 1508's vs a puny junk cvr is what we are talking about. and you can do 4 of the 1508's in the same 3 cubes as 2 of the cvr's and it will be louder.

8s will do more than you think. I ran 3 8s from a brutus 1606 for a while, which was louder and sounded better than my Brahma 15" in a 3.5 cube box receiving more power. I never got metered, but I switched to 4 DD 1008s running off a brutus 2608 and was probably around 148. .75cf net 38 hz is golden for the 1008s and 1508s, I do have 3 1008s for sale. You should be able to run more power to the DD8s than CVR 12s and they will probably get louder. Cone area is not the deciding factor of loudness.

I find your conclusions surprising. The Brahma setup had more cone area, more displacement potential, and a flatter BL curve for less distortion. Therefore I fail to see how you reached any of the conclusions you did. For a burp the 8's might do better, depending on the situation, due to more motors to soak up power. But for music, the Brahma setup has pretty much every advantage.
