Think I made a mistake with my box tuning

I recently got my Skar VVX-12s and box installed in my car. I had the box built tuned @ 28hz and think I went too low with it.

This setup CRUSHES the lows how I want but there seems to be some major major sacrifice in upper bass notes that I didn't think would be that bad.

I'm thinking of getting a new box made. In your guys opinion what would be a happy middle ground here where I will still hit the lows decently but also have decent sound from the higher notes too?

Oh well live and learn, thanks for any help.

Almost all people who tune that low alter their tuning back into the higher ranges do to the same issues you described. The type of car you have and how the sub/port are loading will play even more an roll as well.

Take your setup for example. If you are facing everything back and tuned that low you are actually much much lower then you think do to how the install.

I would suggest tuning higher myself.

ive had my oa 15 in 34.7, 31, and 29 hz boxes. i like the 29 which is what i have it at right now, but have you thought it could be the size of your box that is the difference? the smaller the box the more spl bigger box more sql do to air resistance and such. but maybe try dropping the size of the box down a little to get you that extra punch on those highs but still keep a decently low tuning like 30 - 32 hz. how many cube box do you have right now?

otherwise if you don't want to change the box size you could tune to 33 or so. 34 sounds good to me with a small box but i like a 32/ 33 in a bigger box.

I've always been wondering about this so I'm going to thread jack really quick. so which would be louder/ sound better? , a higher tuned box like 35 hz faced backwards into the trunk (that will drop the tuning to lets say 32, I'm just throwing numbers out to help with the concept) or a box that is tuned to 30 hz and will change to 32 hz when it is faced into the cabin due to cabin gain?

Louder as in SPL numbers it is debatable from car to car but normally everything forward is teh best option.

As for sound..it is all personal preference to be honest.

okay i have mine facing forward and I've heard this is normally louder, but ik a lot of ppl like how it sounds facing the trunk

Try raising your LPF by alot and see if that changes
Yeah I'll see if this changes.

I also have the Audison Bit Ten DSP and the guys at the shop I had it installed at did all the setup and tuning of it with their laptop so they might have some things set at diff. levels also that could be changed to yield a different output.

People will swear up and down all day that 35hz is a good medium but personally it's easier to find your resonant frequency or what sounds best in your vehicle and go from there. I know in Jeeps and some SUVS lows are easier to achieve half the time and almost any tuning will get you them. 28hz is wayyyy too low though I usually go in the range of 30-32hz, 32hz has been my favorite tuning so far.

/edit by 28hz being too low I mean for a daily music beater, i personally loved my 18" @ 27hz while I had it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
