I said they don't have a clear advantage. Verlander is better then you seem to want to give him credit for. He is only going to get better this season. Bonderman was an all-star the first half and tried to pitch through an injury the second half. The first half he had a 3.50 ERA and an unbelievable whip. Schilling is on the down side of his career. At his blog for Newsday, David Lennon relays a conversation he had with an American League scout that saw a lot of RHP Philip Humber:
[The scout] was not impressed. In fact, when his team suggested making a deal for Humber, as part of a package for one of their regular starters, this scout helped shoot it down. While Humber’s curve ball is definitely a plus, he’s not viewed as a top quality prospect by other clubs.
As should be obvious, the scout Lennon that this lack of regard for Humber, once a College World Series hero and the third pick in the 2004 amateur draft, is hampering the Mets’ efforts to get a pitcher like Oakland RHP Dan Haren or Baltimore LHP Erik Bedard.
